Monday, November 30, 2009
This winter will be red hot and smokin’ blues with the release of Johnny Winter’s Live Bootleg Series Volume 6 (Friday Music), the latest collection of super rarities hand-picked by the iconic blues man from his personal archives. In addition, Winter, who has been on tour to sold out crowds throughout Europe, returns to the States for a number of shows slated for this December and continuing through 2010 (full tour schedule is listed below). The CD is in stores January 12 and at digital retailers including iTunes, Amazon.com, eMusic, Rhapsody and others on ?? (date coming from Joe).
Like its five predecessors in the series, all of which charted on the Billboard Blues Chart, Live Bootleg Series Vol. 6 includes rare and historical musical moments from Winter’s 40-plus year career. Here, he pays homage to some of his favorite artists and their songs such as Ray Charles’ “Blackjack,” Freddie King’s “Sen-Sa-Shun,” Texas blues man Frankie Lee Sims’ “She likes to Boogie Real Low,” and B.B. King’s classic “It’s My Own Fault,” an extended “bonus” track that clocks in at nearly 15 minutes of pure blues ecstasy.
The Vol. 6 collection also includes two of Winter’s classic originals: the slide guitar-infused White Line Blues and the jump blues rocker Johnny Guitar.
"I'm really pleased with how well the live series has been received,” Winter said of the collection’s success thus far. “I had so much material from over the years and was very happy to find the right way to distribute it all to my fans. It was great finding a label such as Friday Music to release this material in such a way as it's being presented."
The package features rarely seen photographs both from Winter’s own personal collection and by legendary rock lens man Paul Natkin, with liner notes by Steve Lukather.
Johnny Winter’s Live Bootleg Series Vol. 6 is the latest release in what has been a scorching hot year for the iconic blues/rock guitar slinger. The double CD The Johnny Winter Anthology, Johnny Winter Live Bootleg Series Vol. 5, Johnny Winter the Woodstock Experience and the Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music Director’s Cut 40th anniversary DVD, with never before seen footage of Winter’s performance at the historic festival, were all issued in 2009, as well as Live Through The ‘70s, out at the end of 2008. It is the first in a three-part DVD series with editions covering the 1980s and 1990s still to come. Also of note is the release of the Gibson Custom Shop’s unveiling of its Johnny Winter Signature Firebird V guitar, modeled after the guitarist’s treasured 1963 ‘Bird. It became the fastest-selling guitar in the company’s history and was celebrated with a special performance by Johnny, Slash and Larry Carlton for its induction ceremonies at the famed Gibson headquarters.
Winter, who has never been in better form recently performed with Eric Clapton, John Mayer, Derek Trucks and a host of others at Clapton’s latest Crossroads Festival, which can be seen on the Emmy-winning DVD as well as special guest appearances onstage at the Allman brothers 40th anniversary jam in NYC and the famed Warren Hayes X-mas Jam.
With a fantastic new band and all new show, Johnny Winter’s renown and reputation as one of the world’s original guitar heroes continues.
